The United Nations has appointed him as an Expert Consultant with the United Nations Department of Safety and Security. Dr. Lerner offers the following workshops, presentations and seminars: - Workplace Crisis Management
Protect Your Greatest Asset ... Your People Develop an Organizational Traumatic Incident Management Team In the event of a workplace crisis involving a sudden death, serious illness, an accident, a threat of violence or other tragedy, what is typically done to keep people functioning and mitigate ongoing emotional suffering? In businesses that range from a dozen employees, to several hundred, people generally turn to trusted friends and colleagues for support. During times of crisis, it's easier to talk to those we know, members of the organizational family, than "strangers with name tags." Notwithstanding caregivers' efforts, the magnitude of traumatic events often overwhelms individuals and their families, and compromises an organization's ability to function. In light of the fact that small to medium sized businesses (i.e., 98% of businesses in America) do not generally have employee assistance and human resource personnel standing by, these organizations often find themselves severely impacted in the wake of a crisis. Bringing over two decades of experience to the business world, Dr. Lerner offers a dynamic, unique training program. After utilizing a simple and effective strategy for identifying the "go-to" people within your organization, Dr. Lerner will meet personally with this identified group and train them to effectively manage a workplace crisis. By developing and enhancing peer caregivers' repertoire of helping skills, your business can draw upon its own resources to keep people functioning during a crisis. Research has demonstrated that the best help early on is not rendered by teams of strangers, or mental health practitioners, but instead, by trained and empowered peers. Following this workshop training program, your businesses will have an Organizational Traumatic Incident Management Team in place—a small investment from your training budget that will ultimately protect your organization's greatest asset—its people. Ultimately, this program will not only save your business thousands of dollars in lost productivity per employee, but will also help to lessen the psychological damage and feelings of loneliness employees experience in the aftermath of a crisis. By reaching members of your organizational family early, we can ease emotional pain, keep people functioning and lessen the likelihood of ongoing suffering. We can prevent the acute difficulties of today from becoming the chronic problems of tomorrow. For further information visit www.MarkLerner.com
With the changing spirit of our times, colleges and universities across our nation have been charged with the responsibility of developing crisis management plans. These plans typically focus on the structure of crisis response - in the aftermath of a tragedy. For example, they address such issues as who will serve as members of the Crisis Response Team? What are the specific roles of team members? And, how will information be shared with the university family? Although these structured plans have been developed and implemented by many educational institutions, little attention has been given to the process of university crisis response. For example, once students and/or staff have been assembled in a dormitory lounge, library conference room or other supportive/counseling venue, what is done to help them? What is the goal of early intervention? Who is truly prepared to address emergent psychological needs? Dr. Lerner's university/college crisis workshops and presentations are based on A Practical Guide for University Crisis Response co-authored by Dr. Lerner. These presentations describe the structure and process for effectively managing the wide spectrum of university-based crises - from the seemingly mundane to the most severe. Effective university crisis management cannot be delegated solely to administrators and members of a Crisis Response Team - but all university personnel. By reaching our college and university families early, during times of crisis, we can reestablish a productive educational process and prevent the acute difficulties of today from becoming the chronic problems of tomorrow. We don't wait to call for help, and emergency medical personnel certainly don't wait to transport someone to the hospital before efforts are made to control bleeding. Unfortunately, a "hidden trauma" is often ignored. This trauma leaves the deepest scars and changes people forever—traumatic stress. At the turn of the century, in our pre-September 11th world, Dr. Mark Lerner introduced Acute Traumatic Stress Management (ATSM). ATSM was developed to provide emergency responders and healthcare providers with a Traumatic Stress Response Protocol. It was designed to raise the level of care—beyond traditional emergency medical intervention. It enabled caregivers to address emergent psychological needs. In the wake of September 11th, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, airlines, schools, universities, corporations and the United Nations Department of Safety and Security turned to Dr. Lerner for consultation and training. Today, Dr. Lerner presents grand rounds for physicians, and training in ATSM with emergency services providers.
