Joe David had taught for about 14 years in public and private schools in the East. Concerned about what was happening in education, he began to write about his observations. Many of his views, which were developing while teaching, became the themes for his articles, columns, and books. His first novel, The Fire Within, because of its successful dramatization of important education philosophies, made the reading list of two universities and received national public attention. For about nine years, Mr. David was a frequent radio and television talk show guest who candidly discussed issues in education. His lively, on-air conversations with enthusiastic audiences became the basis for his non-fiction book, Glad You Asked! His second novel, Teacher of the Year, is a scandalously funny satire about modern educator, his pupils, and his colleagues caught in the hopeless crossfire of modern pedagogical theories. In it, the author pokes fun, with unsparing humor, at the know-it-all educators and their sometimes victimized, sometimes victimizing young students. Like The Fire Within, it has also made the reading list at a university. His third book of fiction, As Best We Can, is a collection of short stories, written over several decades, that succeeds at revealing his skill at telling stories in difference voices and his understanding of the human condition. Over the years, Mr. David has written on education issues for professional journals, newspapers, magazines, newsletters, and books, including the Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Project, Education Magazine, the Forum (University of West Florida), and Basic Education (Council for Basic Education). He has also moderated education forums at the National Press Club of Washington, appeared frequently on local and national radio and television, and been a guest speaker at luncheons.
