Chris Stokes

Once described by a major sponsor as the brains behind Jamaica Bobsleigh, Nelson Christian ‘Chris’ Stokes has been an integral and indivisible part of Jamaica Bobsleigh from its first Olympic competition in 1988 until now.

Educated at leading Jamaican high schools, most notably Munro College, Chris went on to complete an Associates Degree at Bronx Community College, a Bachelors Degree in Finance – Cum Laude - at the University of Idaho, an MBA at Washington State University and a post graduate diploma in Banking – with honors - at the American Banker’s Association’s Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Georgetown University.

Chris has rallied his outstanding academic achievement into a successful career in financial institution management.  He now serves as Vice President of Business Development at the Victoria Mutual Building Society, a leading Caribbean financial institution. His clients have included Fortune 500 companies, EDS, General Motors, and Coca Cola.

It is in sport though that Chris has had his greatest impact on the world.  After a successful track and field career at the high school level in Jamaica, Chris went on to compete successfully at both the Junior College and Collegiate levels, including being awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Idaho.  While pursing his MBA at Washington State University and training for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Chris became involved in the Jamaica Bobsleigh team.

Since then, he has participated in four Olympic games as an athlete and has served as president of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation since 1995.  He, who has lived the ups and downs of the Jamaican Bobsleigh team, as an athlete and an administrator, and who has fashioned this team into what it has become - its programs and philosophy- is in a unique position to apply his considerable experience and intellect in telling the story of one of the worlds most recognized and beloved teams – The Jamaican Bobsleigh Team.

He is author of the book ‘Cool Runnings and Beyond – The Story of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Team’.
